Nuremberg – Imperial Castle, History & Franconian Culture

Nuremberg, Bavaria's second-largest city, holds a prominent place in European history as a major center of the Holy Roman Empire. The city's primary landmark is the hilltop Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg), which overlooks the historic center and provides views across the region.
The Old Town is enclosed by its historic city walls. At its heart lies the central market square, the Hauptmarkt, home to the Gothic Beautiful Fountain and Church of Our Lady. Notable cultural sites include the Germanic National Museum and the former home of artist Albrecht Dürer.
The city also plays a key role in 20th-century history. Sites such as the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds and Courtroom 600 at the Nuremberg Trials Memorial offer objective educational insights. Locally, the city is famous for its Nürnberger bratwurst and traditional gingerbread (Lebkuchen).
