Memmingen – Gateway to the Allgäu, History & Regional Heritage

The former Imperial City of Memmingen is located on the edge of the Allgäu region in southwestern Bavaria. Thanks to Memmingen Airport (FMM), the city serves as an accessible entry point to the Bavarian Alps. Its historic center is one of the best-preserved in southern Germany and easily explored on foot.
The Old Town features historic guild houses, city gates, and medieval towers. At its center lies the Marktplatz, home to the Renaissance Town Hall and the Baroque Steuerhaus. Notable sights include St. Martin’s Church, known for its carved choir stalls, and the Seven-Roofed House (Siebendächerhaus).
Memmingen holds an important place in history as the site where the "Twelve Articles" were drafted in 1525, considered an early human rights declaration in Europe. Traditional Bavarian dining and proximity to nearby alpine hiking routes complete the visit.
